Summer is Here! We hope you are staying cool in the summer heat. We have just a few announcements this summer, among them a big thank you to everyone who supported JMEC 14. We couldn't have done it without our participants, project clients, lecturers, mentors, consultants, judges, executive committee and of course our corporate sponsors. We do hope to see everyone back for JMEC 15.

JMEC Announces the Winners of JMEC 14

The Japan Market Expansion Competition named the winners of its fourteenth program year on June 13th, 2008 at Shinsei Bank. Winners were project teams representing Robeco Institutional Asset Management B.V., NRW.INVEST Germany/NRW Japan K.K. and Tokyo American Club. By being a project client in this year’s JMEC program, each participating company received a practical business plan that can be immediately implemented, addressing the specific issues they face in the Japanese market. JMEC/ANZCCJ Event: ParasolMedia - From JMEC to Reality

So what happens to JMEC business plans after the winners have been announced, the prizes awarded and the champagne drunk? In the case of SKW East Asia, client company for the winning market entry plan in JMEC 13 (2007), they formed a new division called ParasolMedia and began implementing the JMEC plan.

The winning plan the company received from their JMEC team outlined a market entry strategy for SKW East Asia to import German-made parasols, such as the kind used at outdoor eateries and beach venues. Although the parasols could be purchased outright, the conceptual idea was to rent the products for a minimal fee to space owners, who agreed to sell the parasol canvases as advertising space.

The first two employees were none other than JMEC team members Uwe Bast and Henry Monahan, hired by their client company to implement the very plan they wrote.

Now one year after completing JMEC, Uwe and Henry will present at the ANZCCJ, telling of their experiences with JMEC and sharing what they have learned about starting a business in Japan and the benefits of the JMEC program.

ANZCCJ members and non-members are welcome to attend this event to find out how this entreprenurial endeavor is succeeding 14 months out. The event will take place on Thursday, July 31, from 6:30pm - 8:30pm at the ANZCCJ Conference Room. A light buffet and drinks will be served. Members: JPY2,900, Non-Members, JPY4,900.

JMEC 15 Schedule Announced

The schedule for JMEC 15 is now available on the JMEC website at http://cts.vresp.com/c/?JapanMarketExpansion/495fcf980c/4c49a6cf1e/b317875ca6.

Information sessions for the upcoming program year will take place on September 18th, October 1st and October 14th from 7:30pm - 9:00pm. There will also be a breakfast information session on Thursday, October 23rd from 8:00am - 9:00am. All sessions will take place at Temple University Japan Campus, Mita Hall, room 502. There is no fee to attend a session but reservations are required.
