Happy New Year!

2008 is off to a great start, and so are this year's Japan Market Expansion Competition (JMEC) teams. At this stage, ten teams are underway with the research and writing of the business plans they will prepare for their clients and for the JMEC judges. Please see Teams, Start your Engines! to learn more about this year's program.

The JMEC program itself is also off to a great start, with the addition of a twelfth supporting Chamber of Commerce. Yes, that's twelve! See Welcome to our Newest Supporting Chamber for details of the latest addition. JMEC also is looking forward to an upcoming opportunity, which you can learn more about in JMEC to Participate in Annual JET Conference. Keep your eyes and ears tuned for more exciting news about JMEC this year, as we gear up for our 15th anniversary.

Of course JMEC would not have seen such success over the years if it were not also for the support of our corporate sponsors. But do you know the marketing effects of your sponsorship support? We would like to share just that with you in Behind the Scenes of JMEC Sponsorship. The sponsoring companies themselves have many exciting, upcoming events. Please go to Sponsor News for more details.

Finally, please Mark your Calendars with important upcoming JMEC dates.

Behind the Scenes of JMEC Sponsorship
As a non-profit organization, JMEC relies on the generous support of its corporate sponsors. Donations are made in the form of cash, products or services, and are an invaluable resource to the continuation of the program. The benefits to the sponsoring company, depending on level of sponsorship, may include employee participation in the business training and plan-writing phases of the program, inclusion of corporate logo in JMEC marketing materials and website, and representation at the Awards Ceremony, among others.

JMEC marketing in 2007 reached over 15,000 individuals through various networking organizations, Chambers of Commerce, and JMEC events such as information sessions and the Annual Awards Ceremony. It gained exposure to 80,000 individuals through media outlets such as Metropolis magazine, which featured an article on the program in September. For an example of JMEC in the media, please see an interview with JMEC Executive Chairperson Verena Urbschat on www.itv.com (which is also a JMEC sponsor!).

The deadline for JMEC sponsorship is June 1, 2008. We hope you will consider this when developing your budget for the new fiscal year. If you would like to discuss sponsorship options or benefits, please contact us. To become a sponsor, or to renew or upgrade your sponsorship, please complete the sponsorship reply form or contact us. Thank you again to our current sponsors for all your generous support!

Teams, Start your Engines!
It is that time of year again, when the JMEC lecture series has wrapped up, the teams have been formed and the projects have been assigned. The teams are now revving their engines and the race to the finish line has begun! On January 19th, the participants were placed onto 10 teams of 5-6 individuals, and each team received the information about its project and client. They then had the opportunity to discuss the project with their mentors and consultants, before adjourning to a social event hosted by JMEC at a nearby pub. The social provided a nice opportunity for team members to get to know not only each other better, but also to get to know their mentors and consultants. The teams will work diligently for the next four months, with the guidance of their mentors and consultants, to research and write the business plans.
